Licensing rules are scattered across state boards, city offices, and PDFs that change without notice. A contractor trying to get licensed, add a trade, or work across a state line can lose days just finding the right exam, fee, and form.

Each guide pulls one state and one trade onto a single page: who issues the license, the experience and exams it takes, the fees, how renewal works, and a link to the official board, so you can confirm the details at the source before you apply.

Contractor licensing FAQs

In most states, yes for electrical and plumbing work, which are usually licensed by a state board. HVAC varies more: some states license it statewide, others leave it to cities and counties. Open your state guide to see who licenses your trade, and check with your city or county as well, since local permits and registrations can apply on top of a state license.
Most states ask for documented work experience, a passing score on a trade exam (often with a separate business and law exam), an application fee, and proof of insurance. Some also require a surety bond or financial statements. The exact hours, exams, and fees differ by state and license class, and each state guide lists them.
They are the usual steps in plumbing and electrical licensing. Apprentices work under supervision while they log hours, journeymen can work on their own under a licensed contractor, and a master license lets you pull permits and supervise others. Running your own company often needs a separate contractor license as well.
Yes, if you work with refrigerants. EPA Section 608 certification is a federal requirement for technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerant. It is separate from any state or local HVAC license.
Only where the two states have a reciprocity agreement for your license type. Otherwise you apply in the new state and usually sit its exam. Reciprocity terms change, so confirm with the licensing board in the state where you want to work.
Each guide summarizes the state requirements and links to the official licensing board. Fees, exams, and renewal rules change, so confirm the details with the board before you apply or renew.
