Who Needs a License in Kentucky?
Anyone performing plumbing work for compensation in Kentucky needs to be licensed as either a journeyman or master plumber. This includes work involving pressurized water systems, drain-waste-vent systems, and, in some contexts, gas piping if under the scope of plumbing law and code regulations. How to Meet Plumbing License Requirements in Kentucky

After passing the exam (75%+ for journeyman, 80%+ for master), pay your license fee to the Kentucky State Treasurer. Your license term is prorated to your birth month.
Each year, renew your license before expiration by submitting the online or paper renewal form (DHBC L-1), proof of continuing education, and (for master) updated proof of insurance plus the renewal fee.

Kentucky does not have formal reciprocity agreements for plumbing licenses with other states. However, out-of-state plumbers may qualify for exam eligibility if they show proof of holding an equivalent license for at least two years or four years’ documented experience.
