Who Needs a License in Oklahoma?
Anyone performing HVAC work, including installation, service, repair, or replacement of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, gas piping, sheet metal, or process piping, needs to hold a proper CIB-issued license in Oklahoma. This rule applies to both individuals and firms. There is no minimum job value exemption for HVAC work in this state, so you must be licensed even for small projects.
Apprentices may perform work only under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman or contractor, and must be registered annually with the CIB. A general contractor’s license does not cover HVAC work, mechanical licensing is always required.
Similarly, the "Limited Residential Journeyman" license restricts work to new installations in certain dwellings (single/two-family, up to 3 stories, with specified tonnage and BTU caps), and excludes gas piping, soldering, refrigerant, or electrical connections. In contrast, unlimited and limited classifications expand your allowed scope. Notably, air duct cleaning work is exempt and does not need licensing.

How to Meet HVAC License Requirements in Oklahoma

Applicants must satisfy specific requirements for the path to either journeyman or contractor. Meeting HVAC license requirements in Oklahoma means you must be at least 18, have sufficient documented experience, meet bond and insurance standards, and sometimes provide additional certifications.
Experience and Age
Journeyman license applicants need at least 3 years of verifiable mechanical trade experience in Oklahoma or another recognized jurisdiction. The CIB allows reductions for formal trade education: for example, an associate degree or approved trade school diploma may count toward required experience, but you must still have hands-on work time as detailed on the journeyman page.
Only time as a registered apprentice or equivalent military/out-of-state experience counts. You must be a minimum of 18 years old.
Bond and Insurance
Contractor applicants must file a $5,000 corporate surety bond valid at the time of issuance and renewal. The bond is a guarantee for lawful operation and customer protection. General liability insurance must cover at least $50,000 per occurrence, and the CIB must appear as certificate holder. The required insurance cannot lapse, let it expire and your license will be suspended.
Education and Specialty Certifications
Formal trade school or college programs can reduce required experience, but only if the program is approved by the CIB (see mechanical application forms for the list of recognized institutions). Applicants for Medical Gas need an ASSE 6010 certification, but for general HVAC work, federal EPA 608 is not required by state statute, though it may be a practical necessity for refrigerant handling in the field.
Criminal Background and Federal Requirements
There is no criminal background check or fingerprinting step for Oklahoma HVAC licensing at this time. However, apprenticeships must be registered and annually renewed. Additional local business or contractor registrations may still apply, always verify with the CIB and applicable municipalities.
HVAC License Exams in Oklahoma

Renewal and Continuing Education for HVAC License in Oklahoma

Reinstatement
If your license lapses, you may reinstate by paying all renewal and late fees, and by providing current bond and insurance verification where required. Letting insurance or bonding lapse will cause immediate license suspension.
Reciprocity
Oklahoma does not maintain formal HVAC license reciprocity agreements with other states. However, HVAC license requirements in Oklahoma allow consideration of out-of-state licenses when evaluating experience or exam eligibility for journeyman classification. Your out-of-state license must be current and in good standing to qualify.
