How hvac contractors use a markup and margin calculator
Markup and margin describe the same sale from two directions, and mixing them up is one of the most expensive pricing mistakes contractors make. Markup measures profit against what you paid for the part; margin measures that same profit against what you charge the customer. Because the denominators differ, the numbers never match — a 50% markup is a 33.3% margin, and a 100% markup is only a 50% margin. Quote a "50% margin" when you actually applied a 50% markup and you have quietly underpriced the job.

What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is profit as a percentage of your cost: (price − cost) ÷ cost. Margin is profit as a percentage of the sell price: (price − cost) ÷ price. On the same sale, markup is always the larger number. A part that costs $100 and sells for $150 has a 50% markup but a 33.3% margin.
How do I convert markup to margin?
Divide the markup by 100 plus the markup: margin = markup ÷ (100 + markup) × 100. So a 50% markup is 50 ÷ 150 = 33.3% margin, and a 100% markup is 100 ÷ 200 = 50% margin. To go the other way, markup = margin ÷ (100 − margin) × 100.
How much should hvac contractors mark up parts and materials?
Materials and equipment markups commonly run 20–50%, while smaller parts, fittings, and consumables are often marked up 50–100% or more to cover procurement, handling, warranty, and stocking. Set your markup so the resulting gross margin covers overhead and leaves the net profit you target — not just to match a competitor.
