How hvac contractors split crew and subcontractor costs on a job
When a job runs on a mix of your own crew and subcontractors, one blended number hides where you actually make money. Subs are a cost you mark up and pass through; your crew is a cost you carry against the contract price. Splitting the job by party shows which subbed scopes are padding your margin and whether your in-house labor is actually paying off.
This calculator uses the standard job-costing method: each subcontractor is billed at cost × (1 + markup), materials the same, and the revenue left after those scopes is what covers your crew’s labor and margin. It keeps markup and margin straight, markup is measured on cost, margin on the bill, converted only with the divisor method (a 20% markup is a 16.7% margin), so the per-party numbers are honest. Use it with the Job Pricing and Bid calculators to price the whole job, then this tool to see how the profit splits.
