What is a Plumbing method statement?

A method statement — sometimes called a safe work method statement or SWMS — describes how a plumbing task will be carried out safely, step by step, with the hazards and controls for each step. It is used to plan the work and brief the crew before they start.

A risk assessment identifies hazards and scores the risk; a method statement describes the safe sequence of work and the controls at each step. They are complementary — the risk assessment informs the controls that appear in the method statement.

For higher-risk or complex work — crane lifts, service changeovers, confined spaces, or anything a general contractor or client requires. Many commercial sites will not let a crew start without one on file.

A competent person who understands the task prepares it, and a supervisor or safety lead typically reviews it. The whole crew should be briefed on it before the work begins, which is why this template keeps it clear and printable.
