Pick up almost any gas line pressure test form in circulation and it prints one requirement: 10 psi for 15 minutes. It reads as though it were the national standard. It is not. It is one common local amendment that has been photocopied enough times to pass for the code, and a plumber who quotes it to an inspector in a jurisdiction that amended to something else is quoting the wrong authority.
What the code actually says is a floor. IFGC 406.4.1 requires a test pressure of not less than 1.5 times the proposed maximum working pressure, but not less than 3 psig, irrespective of design pressure. On an ordinary 7 in. w.c. system the multiple lands near 0.38 psig, so the absolute minimum controls and the answer is 3 psig. Upstream of a medium-pressure regulator, on a 5 psig service, the multiple controls instead and the answer is 7.5 psig. Same code sentence, different answer, because the working pressure changed. This report asks for the working pressure per section and derives the requirement, then prints the derivation on the export so nobody has to trust it.
Hold time works the same way and carries the one real divergence between the two model codes. IFGC 406.4.2 scales with the system: half an hour for each 500 cubic feet of pipe volume or fraction thereof, a 10 minute minimum for anything under 10 cubic feet, and never required to exceed 24 hours. IRC G2417.4.2, which governs one- and two-family dwellings, drops the volume term entirely and sets a flat 10 minutes. A form that prints a single duration is wrong under one book or the other. This one asks which code applies.
Then there is the clause nobody prints at all, and it is the one that decides whether the test meant anything. IFGC 406.4 constrains the instrument: a mechanical gauge's full scale may not exceed 5 times the test pressure. Read the other way, your test pressure must sit at or above 20 percent of the dial. A 3 psig test on the 0-30 psi gauge in the truck is already outside that band; on a 0-100 psi gauge the reading sits at 3 percent of span, where the pipe can lose real pressure without the needle moving enough to see. A test that "held" on that gauge is not evidence that nothing leaked. This builder scores the gauge you recorded against the pressure you pulled and says so on the report, in a Findings block, whether it passed or failed.
Because amendments are the norm rather than the exception, the report does not pretend the code is the last word. Enter your AHJ's test pressure or hold time and the verdict is scored against that instead — and the export prints both the amended figure and the code minimum it replaced, with the amendment reference, so the inspector can see exactly what standard the pass was measured against.
