How to use this template

    Set up the report

    Add your company, the project and client, the system designation, and the TAB technician running the test along with their certification number.

Why air balance reports decide whether an HVAC system passes

A system can be installed perfectly and still fail. If the air is not where the design says it should be, rooms run hot and cold, equipment short-cycles, and the commissioning authority rejects the job. The air balance report is the document that proves the air actually landed where it was supposed to — outlet by outlet, in writing.

The tolerance is where most reports go wrong. NEBB, AABC, and TABB do not agree: NEBB allows an individual outlet in a room with three or more registers to sit within fifteen percent of design while holding the room itself to ten, and AABC replaces the percentage entirely with a ten CFM window once design drops to a hundred CFM or below. Use a flat ten percent on everything and you will fail a bathroom register that actually passes, and pass a fan that actually does not. This template applies the rule your specification names.

What is an HVAC air balance report?

It is the record a test and balance technician produces after adjusting an air system — the design airflow versus the measured airflow at every supply, return, and exhaust outlet, plus the air handler fan and static pressure data. It is what proves the installed system delivers the design engineer's airflow, and it is normally required before a commercial job is accepted.

Ten percent of design is the figure all the major references converge on at terminals — NEBB, AABC, TABB, and ASHRAE 111 all land there. The differences are in the edge cases. NEBB widens to plus or minus fifteen percent for an individual outlet in a room with three or more outlets. AABC uses an asymmetric minus five to plus ten percent on fans, and swaps the percentage for a plus or minus ten CFM window when design is a hundred CFM or less. Pick the standard your specification names and this template applies its rules automatically.

Ak converts a measured face velocity into airflow: CFM equals Ak times velocity. But ASHRAE 111 defines it as the measured airflow divided by the velocity reading of a particular instrument used in a prescribed manner — it is an instrument-specific calibration ratio, not a free area. The same grille can carry very different Ak values depending on which meter you hold and where you hold the probe, and most manufacturers have stopped publishing it. Field-verify Ak against a duct traverse rather than assuming a catalog number carries over to your instrument.

Yes, if you are meaningfully above sea level or off standard temperature. The 4005 constant behind velocity-pressure readings assumes air at 0.075 pounds per cubic foot. In Denver, air is roughly 0.0616, so a velocity-pressure instrument under-reads by about ten percent until you correct it. Enter altitude and air temperature and this template calculates the density and the correction factor for you.

In practice they are the same document, and the terms are used interchangeably. "Test and balance" (TAB) is the broader industry term and can also cover hydronic balancing; "air balance" refers specifically to the air side. This template covers the air side — outlets, fan, and static pressure.
