Electrical Markup & Margin Calculator
Price parts and materials the right way, enter your cost and a markup, a target margin, or a sell price, and the calculator solves the rest, showing markup, margin, and gross profit side by side. A 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin, so electrical shops that quote the wrong number leave money on every job. Free, no signup.
Sell price per unit
$84.00
$60.00 cost + $24.00 gross profit
40.0% markup is a 28.6% margin, not the same number.
- Your cost: 71.4% of price
- Gross profit (margin): 28.6% of price
Margin is the green slice, profit as a share of the price you charge. Markup measures that same profit against the amber slice (your cost), so it always reads higher.
| Markup | True margin |

margin = markup ÷ (100 + markup). Quote the wrong one and you underprice every job.

Enter your cost and pick what you know
Start with what you pay for the part or material. Then choose a mode: enter a markup, a target margin, or the sell price you have in mind, you only fill in one.
Get sell price, markup, and margin together
The calculator returns the sell price, gross profit, markup percent, and margin percent at once, plus a cost-vs-profit split so the difference between markup and margin is obvious.
Price to the margin you actually keep
Use the markup-to-margin conversion table and trade benchmarks to check your numbers, then set prices that hit the gross margin your business needs.

How electrical contractors use a markup and margin calculator
Markup and margin describe the same sale from two directions, and mixing them up is one of the most expensive pricing mistakes contractors make. Markup measures profit against what you paid for the part; margin measures that same profit against what you charge the customer. Because the denominators differ, the numbers never match, a 50% markup is a 33.3% margin, and a 100% markup is only a 50% margin. Quote a "50% margin" when you actually applied a 50% markup and you have quietly underpriced the job.
This calculator removes the guesswork. Enter your landed cost and one driver, a markup, a target margin, or the sell price, and it back-solves the rest with the textbook formulas (price = cost × (1 + markup), price = cost ÷ (1 − margin)), then shows markup, margin, and gross profit together. Materials markup commonly runs 20-50% for electrical work, with small parts often doubled or more; use the built-in benchmarks and conversion table to sanity-check your pricing. Pair it with the Profit Margin and Job Pricing calculators so the prices you quote clear both your parts margin and your whole-job overhead.
